Alcohol and Other Drug Programming and Education

The Office of Student Development Programs coordinates the alcohol and other drug education and programming for students. Programs include:

"AlcoholEdu"

As part of the new student orientation at Washington College, every first-year student before arriving on campus is required to complete AlcoholEdu for College, an online alcohol prevention program. Used at more than 350 campuses nationwide, the course educates students about the effects of alcohol. It aims not to tell you what to think but to give information for your personal decisions and dealing with the drinking behavior of peers.

TIPS Training

The Office of Student Development Programs provides TIPS (Training for Intervention Procedures) Training several times throughout the academic year and upon request from student groups or individuals. TIPS training is mandatory for all Student-Athlete Mentors, Resident Assistants, Greek Life Leaders and Student Event staff, but is also available to other groups or individuals.

TIPS for the University is a 2-hour training program, free of charge to students, that equips its participants with information and skills needed to intervene in situations where their peers are misusing alcohol. The program is composed of three general sections: Information about alcohol and its effects; skill training in evaluating behavioral cues and responses to alcohol misuse; and practice and rehearsal where students get to practice effective responses to alcohol misuse through role-playing. With the successful completion of the workshop and a certification quiz, students are "TIPS for the University Certified" for three years.
